The Constructive Club

In 1972, the Summerway Junior Lawn Tennis Club leased a plain wooden pavilion from Exeter City Council.  Over a period of three decades, the Club made it more like home by adding drainage, plumbing, toilets, wash basins, electricity, lighting, power points, a kitchen area, paved access path, and more, all at its own expense.

The Destructive Council

In 2007, the Exeter City Council decided, at an in-house huddle to which no Club representative was invited, to demolish what had become the children’s clubhouse.  ECC had reacquired the premises from Devon County Council, but took no steps to protect its asset. After exposing it to the vandals, it was demolished in a single day.
